Nevill Group Ltd was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a truly distinctive signage package for the headquarters of the Roald Dahl Story Company in Mayfair, London.
The brief? To create something worthy of a golden ticket.
With a requirement for exceptionally deep, intricate built-up lettering, a perfectly matched metallic gold finish and a heritage Mayfair setting to consider, this was a project that demanded extensive research, specialist materials and an uncompromising eye for detail.
From initial artwork through to manufacture and installation, every element was carefully considered to deliver a signage solution that was every bit as special as the company it represents.
The Challenge: Deep, Intricate 3D Signage
The client required bespoke built-up signage letters with considerable depth and intricate detailing. Achieving this level of definition whilst maintaining a lightweight construction and an exceptionally high-quality finish presented an interesting manufacturing challenge.
Rather than settling for conventional signage materials, we undertook a dedicated research and development process to identify a specialist millable, lightweight material capable of delivering the required depth, precision and surface quality.
Finding the right material was just the beginning. The real craftsmanship would come in the finishing.
Specialist Milling and Meticulous Gold Finishing
Once the material had been selected, we moved into the manufacturing phase.
Each individual letter was precision milled to achieve the required shape, depth and intricate detailing. The raw milled surfaces then underwent multiple stages of careful sanding to remove machining imperfections and create the smooth, consistent surface required for a premium metallic finish.
Our finishing process included:
Precision CNC milling of the bespoke lettering.
Multi-stage sanding to achieve a flawless surface.
Specialist priming to prepare the material.
Application of a bespoke gloss metallic gold paint finish.
A final lacquer coating to protect the finish and deliver the desired appearance.
The result was a striking set of deep, built-up gold letters with a refined, luxurious finish.
Attention to Detail: Matching the Gold Hinges of the Office Doors
One of the details that really made this project special came during the finish selection process.
When discussing the desired shade of gold with the client, we asked whether they had a particular reference or finish in mind.
Their response?
They loved the gold hinges on their office doors.
Rather than selecting a standard metallic gold from a colour chart, we took the brief literally. We sampled and matched the finish of those exact door hinges to ensure the new signage complemented the existing interior perfectly.

Specialist Installation Within a Historic Mayfair Building
Manufacturing exceptional signage is one thing. Installing it correctly is another.
The headquarters is situated within a historic Mayfair building dating back to the 1700s, meaning the installation required additional planning, care and consideration.
Working within a building of this age meant conventional fixing methods weren't necessarily appropriate. We therefore specified specialist fixings and carefully planned the installation to ensure the signage was securely mounted whilst respecting the character and fabric of the historic surroundings.
Every stage of the installation was approached with precision, ensuring the finished lettering sat exactly as intended.
Completing the Project with a Polished Brass Exterior Sign
To complement the internal built-up lettering, we also designed, manufactured and installed a polished brass exterior sign.
Set against the architectural character of its Mayfair surroundings, the polished brass provided a timeless, sophisticated finish that feels perfectly at home within the area's historic streetscape.
The exterior signage creates a recognisable and elegant point of identification for the headquarters, bringing the overall signage package together beautifully.
